Asma Hasan: A Short Biography

A leading voice in the American Muslim community, Asma Gull Hasan has done tremendous work in dispelling widely held myths about the practice of Islam. Through her highly acclaimed books, her frequent appearances on national television, and her work as a columnist for major American newspapers, Asma Hasan has addressed Muslim stereotypes and shown an alternative view of her religion, which is based in tolerance, diversity, and respect.

The daughter of Pakistani immigrants, Asma Hasan was raised in the distinctly American community of Pueblo, Colorado. An excellent student, Hasan showed tremendous aptitude for debate, writing, and public speaking throughout her academic career. Graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors from the prestigious Groton School, Asma Hasan subsequently enrolled at Wellesley College, where she also earned Magna Cum Laude distinction. Asma Hasan’s undergraduate thesis at Wellesley, “Unity and Diversity in American Islam: Islam in America Comes of Age,” would foreshadow her later works.

Publishing her first book, “American Muslims: The New Generation,” in 2000, Asma Hasan established herself as a new voice in the contemporary American Muslim community. Following the success of her first book with 2004’s “Why I Am a Muslim,” - which was nominated for the 2005 Books for a Better Life Award by the National MS Society - Asma Hasan cemented her reputation as a well-respected and forward-thinking authority on Islam in America.

Frequently asked to provide lectures on Islam in America for the U.S. State Department and perspective on her faith for national media outlets, Asma Hasan has contributed to The O’Reilly Factor and Fox News Today, CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and the History Channel. Additionally, Asma Hasan has written numerous Op-Ed pieces for The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Beliefnet.com.

Outside of her writing, Asma Hasan is an accomplished lawyer. A graduate of the New York University School of Law, Asma Hasan currently works as the Chief Legal Counsel and Senior Vice President for the Colorado healthcare software company HealthTrio, LLC.
